In Jira, you could have encountered the two terms, team managed project and company managed project used concurrently without realising they might mean something different in the terms of project administration.

And in reality they do.

The differences are subtle, but if you want to take your Jira administration to the next level or you want a bit more advanced project administration, you should totally know the difference.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: 👉 Next-gen and classic are now team-managed and company-managed.

What’s stayed the same?

Well, the two types of project get a lot of common. For example for the both types you can have a roadmap, a kanban board, custom issue types custom workflow, plugin etc.

What’s different?

The difference lies in very subtle details. It can be said, that company managed project has been built upon team managed project.

As you can see from the comparison table above, company managed project contains a little bit more advanced featured and little bit more advanced configuration.

Next-gen and classic are now team-managed and company-managed

Since March 2021 you might have noticed that there is no longer a “next-gen” or “classic” project in Jira (cloud). Or is you still have your projects labelled as so, be sure that such labels are going away.

Atlassian decided to rename the project types as follows:

  • classic project became 👉 company managed projects
  • next-gen project became 👉 team managed project

The reason for renaming as said by Atlassian product manager Bree Davies:

We have carefully (some might say excruciatingly so) chosen names that are descriptive and grounded in our long-term vision for Jira: we are working toward a world where the only fundamental difference between team-managed and company-managed projects will be how they are administered.
