A term Space is something you might have recently heard regarding Jira. You might find it confusing at first, because this term has been widely used in Confluence – where it is represents some kind of folder for all of your Confluence content (pages, blogs, etc…).

Well, in 2025 it was decided by authors of Jira, that this term will be used here as well. In particular, “Projects” from Jira have been renamed to “Spaces“. Or rather, a Jira “Project“, is now a Jira “Space“.

Why rename Projects to Spaces

Well, the reason is very simple. Jira is now a project management tool used by a wide range of teams – who no longer run only projects with a clear scope (precisely defined goals, start date and end date), but also open ended projects, for example customer service or similar.

This is why the term space refers to some kind of “collection of work” which is to be defined by each team individually.
